EFFECT OF STORAGE AND DISPLAY ITEMS ON ART OBJECTS

C P UN1VAL
Abstract

In any museum, particularly in the art museums, exhibits either from display or from stores are taken to int conservation laboratory when they start showing the signs of decay. Whenever such decay or deformity occurs (he prime suspects will be micro-organisms; the other causes that may strike the museum officer's mind, may be poor form of a paint or varnish or adhesive that was used on a stand in the stores or on a panel in the show case from where the effected exhibit comes to the lab oratory for treatment. Normally, when paints, varnishes etc., are used either for sacks in the stores or inside the show cases, the exhibits nearby effect adversely. While using the commercial products, particularly synthetic ones, it is always suggested to test chzck the effects. This paper deals with the effects of storage and display materials on the exhibits and the precautions to be taken while choosing the material.

Introduction

Conservation of an and archaeological material is a continuous process involving diagnosis of decay, its curative treatment and prevention from further decay. High importance is given to
etc. of artifacts in one way or the other. During these operations, which form essential part of a museum activity, a large number of materials in different forms such as fabrication material, paints, varnishes etc., are used.

All material items are subjected to degradation, but synthetic materials with large amount of aaditives, liberate fumes, vapours etc. These will adversely affect artifacts. This phenomenon is more pronounced in tropical climates. The effects could be tarnishing of metals and zari works, fad ing and colour changes in pigments, activation of metallic corrosion and so on. Decorative metals like Bidri works, Niello work, inlays, lead coins etc. are the most effected ones.
A systematic study thus involves, identifying the responsible materials, possible effects and testing / selection process.

Materials involved

Broadly, various types of materials used indisplay, storage, packing etc. can be classified into four categories
